Savannah, Georgia

A sunset last evening.  This park has a beautiful lake with lots of white swans, Canadian geese, egrets and who knows what else ! !   Alligators???

What a beautiful, clean city Savannah is.  Street cleaners come by twice a day picking litter so this is absolutely the cleanest city we have visited.  Unlike all the garbage piled on the streets of New York City streets waiting for the garbage trucks in the middle of the night ! ! ! There are about 22 "squares" in downtown Savannah which all have a statue in the middle.  They are a gathering place for everyone to visit with their neighbors. We arrived here at our campground last night, had root beer floats and watched the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. It was written by John Berendt, an author from Savannah and was also set in Savannah.  On today's bus tour we saw some of the settings from the movie. Chablis, a transvestite character in the movie, still lives in Savannah and still does a monthly show.  The movie is called "A Savannah Story" which tells of the effort to put on aires that may not be your true self. Status is very important. We heard that same story in Charleston. Social status seems to be very important to some people. Lots of "old" money in town.

This is another city with lots of old, expensive houses downtown.  Also, one of the oldest circular railroad changing stations in the country that is still in use today.

Downspouts like this dolphin are a sign of wealth.

This is the house in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil..

This Catholic Church was compared to the Vatican by the tour guide.  They have spent millions in the last few years on renovations.
The organ was huge up in the balcony

Spanish moss hangs from many trees, beautiful but it contains spiders and chiggers !  YIKES.  Advice is to not pick it unless you wear gloves and immediately put it into a paper bag and microwave it! ! !   LOL  Also, it is not moss at all, it is an air plant.

Lunch was at the Lady and Her Sons, Paula Deens restaurant, which was VERY good. Comfort food never tasted so good.  Mashed potatoes and gravy were the best ever. We then had a couple hours to shop along the waterfront.

This kind of iron work is also a sign of wealth.
