Palmer, Alaska

Heading from Valdez to Palmer we noticed signs for the Valdez 400.  Wasn't sure what that meant but we started to see bicycles here and there.  Amazing how many people bicycle in very rural areas.  What we discovered is that this was a real event.  It went out 200 miles and then back to Valdez.  Not sure how long they were gonna take to do that but there were "aid" stations every once in a while.  No one was carrying a lot of gear so really not sure.  We maybe saw 100 bikes total.  Very interesting as they also did not appear to be racing.
